We have a lot of questions regarding this matter. The simple fact is that we are the main wholesaler of travertine stone here in WA, so we import these baths into Australia by putting them on top of our stone in the cargo.

In simple word, YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY for the import/transportation freight because we did the hard work for you!

Mataka would not compromise on quality. That’s our business approach - “First grade quality” That is the reason why we stand strong in the market. We don’t advertise much, our works are mostly from word-of mouth. We have good, strong support system – industry clients and the media. We always believe that if we have the right product at the right price, the publicity will come itself. We are passionate about bringing quality pieces with affordable prices and share it with the public. We’ve been in the market long enough, it’s not about making money anymore (even though it didn’t hurt), and it’s more about self satisfaction!

And the main reason for us to bring in the baths is because: We need one ourselves for our home!

We are now based in Perth; we bought a house and renovated it. During our “home wares” shopping for the new place, Mrs Mataka (she’s the one handling the bathwares business), wanted a bath. Coming from a background of appreciating hard earned money, Mrs Mataka always complaint that the free standing baths she liked are highly expensive in the market.

The good thing is that she did not only complaint; she made extensive research and discovered that in the baths market here in WA, the price gap is outrageous. The bath she really liked was $5k in the market, and the second bath she liked was $800 but hollow not solid So she decided to fill in the price gap by persuading Mr Mataka to invest in her new found passion. And that was where it all began…

And Mrs Mataka also found out that the designer brand/ designer-designed looking baths are too big for her “cute” space. Home Beautiful explained our baths well, quoted “The bath is slightly shorter than the average to fit into the space, yet its narrow rim means it has plenty of capacity”.

So let’s say our ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Mataka that managed to get Mr Mataka to venture into new business opportunity, bringing the affordable free standing baths into the Australia market.

After being in the stone industry working with builders, designers and architects for almost 30 years, Mataka received many feedbacks from these clients that their clients always wanted an affordable statement piece for their home. After many weeks of research, Mataka decided to bring into Australia affordable free standing baths. Of course with the fact that during the research we found out that average Australians spend longer hour nowadays in the bathroom, such a theraupic moment!

We started from a humble beginning selling them online on eBay, and one sweet morning, one of the editors of the prestigious home decoration magazine, Home Beautiful Australia, contacted us inquiring about the bath tub and the rest is history.

ORIGIN OF TRAVERTINE

The rock travertine is a natural chemical which is deposited from the water of mineral springs especially hot springs or streams saturated with calcium carbonate .

When carbon dioxide-rich water percolates through rocks in limestone areas, the water dissolves the limestone and becomes saturated with it. When the water resurfaces later, the sudden drop in pressure and the change in temperature cause the water to release the carbon dioxide gas, much like fizzy drinks. The calcium carbonate then re-crystallizes. The resulting rock is typically quite porous with numerous cavities.

Extensive deposits existed at Trivoli near Rome. In fact, travertine derives its name from this town. Tivoli was known as Tibur in ancient Roman times. The ancient name for the stone was lapis tiburtinus meaning tibur stone, which has been corrupted to travertine.

Travertine is one of several natural stones that are used for paving patios and garden paths. It is sometimes known as travertine limestone, sometimes as travertine marble; these are the same stone, even though it is neither limestone or marble. The stone is characterized by pitted holes and troughs in its surface.

Although these troughs occur naturally, they suggest to some eyes that considerable wear and tear has occurred over many years. Some installers use a grout to fill these holes, whereas others leave them open. Travertine can be purchased "filled" or "unfilled." It can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish and comes in a variety of colors from grey to coral-red. Travertine is most commonly available in tiles sizes for floor installations.

Travertine is one of the most frequently used stones in modern architecture and is commonly seen as facade material, wall cladding, and flooring.
